The House Blessing (Haus Segen) text reveals the intense zeal of the German immigrant for the establishment of a home in which there is purity and peace, and for the maintenance of a family of which God is a member.
Sukey Harris, my dear mother, was born in 1934 to Pennsylvania Dutch speaking parents on a farm in Lebanon County, PA. Her work was juried in Fraktur, Calligraphic Drawing and Scherenschnitte in the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, and she also created 3-dimensional gourd carvings using many of her other skills to embellish. Samples of her work have been featured in Early American Life, Country Home, and The Clarion magazine of the Museum of American Folk Art. She was a founder of the Guild of American Papercutters. Most of her work was commissioned special orders which she framed in her own painted, grained, and carved frames. All proceeds from her work went to her lovingly and painstakingly restored early Pennsylvania German log house located in Annville, which she intended to be a resource center for the teaching and practice of folk art traditions and life skills.
